Ladies and gentlemen

Assalaamu’alaikum wr.wb

First of all, I would like to thanks Alloh SWT because of his blessing, we can gather in this event. And then, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to the English Speech Contest Comitee who has given us this opportunity to deliver the speech on the topic of  ‘The Impact of Western Culture to the Local culture.’

            Ladies and gentlemen,

In the modern era, Information spreads very quckly. It means the information enters into our surrounding trough mass media, like television or internet. Now days, the world where we live can not be separated by time and distance. We can see the earth quake and tidal wave wich happened in Japan only in a few seconds. For example, the new fashion launched in Paris today can be imitated tomorrow. So, the globalization era will impact to our local culture. Ladies and gentlemen, do you agree if we imitated all western culture?

Of course not. We should select and choose wich culture suitable with us.

Ladies and gentlemen,

In our opinion there are three “F” represent Western Culture wich impact Local Culture.

What are they ? have you heard before, ladies and gentlemen?

Okay, let’s explain one by one.

The first “F” is Food. Of course it includes drink too. Now days, Indonesian people especially teenagers will feel more self confidence if they eat Western Food likes McD, hot dog, pizza and many other food or drink. The impact of this, the teenagers will proud if they can consume them instead of feeling not self confidence if consume local food or beverage like gado-gado, peuyeum, bandrek, and so on. Actually our local menu is more nutritious then  western menu.

And then what is the second “F” ? do you know ladies and gentlemen ? well, the second “F” is Fashion. The teenagers sometimes imitate the style of movie star, favourite singers, sports players, but they never think wether match or not match. The technology likes chell phones is also a new life style loved by us. In the past , if we would like to make “ Silaturrahmi  Anjang Sono “ (visiting) is the best way. But now, we just call or send message, it is simply we think. More over, the cell phone fulfilled by internet facility. We can access information, music, video, or games freely. If we never filter, it can not be ignored the bad video seen by us, what’s wrong next ? The term “Free” becomes more popular like free association, free sex, and the other “Free”.

The third “F” is Fun. We need entertainment in our life but it is not everything. Film, tv program, playing game online don’t be our routin activities the can influence our personality.

Ladies and gentlemen,

In our conclusion, let’s love local culture and filter western culture. Let’s civilize mutual aid culture (Gotong Royong) instead of individualism. Let’s consume local food instead of western food or drink . let’s think , not all western cultures are suitable for us.

Finally, I hope to have posed some problems and issues wich can thrill and stimulate our thinking and discussions in a fruitful way. I am grateful for your attention.
